Endnote-Free UF Students Navigate COVID-19 Quarantine and Testing Protocol

As part of their efforts to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 on campus, the University of Florida (UF) implemented a robust quarantine and testing protocol for students who had been in close contact with confirmed cases. This protocol aimed to identify and isolate potential carriers of the virus while also providing them with timely access to diagnostic testing.

According to records, 4 student contacts of confirmed COVID-19 cases were quarantined and offered RT-PCR testing at day 3, a crucial step in excluding students who may have been infected at the same time as the confirmed case. In some instances, testing was delayed until days 10 to 14 due to unforeseen circumstances. The methods used for genetic testing of isolates have been thoroughly documented.

The Alachua County Health Department played a vital role in the testing process, providing reverse transcriptase–polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) testing for symptomatic students and contact tracing for COVID-19-positive confirmed cases. In addition, RT-PCR and rapid antigen test results from private physicians were included in the case confirmation process.

To ensure continuity of academic programs during this challenging period, UF adopted a hybrid model of virtual and in-person instruction. A significant percentage of students – 49% – opted to enroll for in-person instruction, with the remaining students participating remotely.

The project's institutional review boards, comprising both the University of Florida and the Florida Department of Health, reviewed and approved the protocol, deeming it to meet the criteria for a public health surveillance activity. Before sample collection, signed informed consent was obtained from parents, ensuring that all participants were aware of their role in the study.

The UF COVID-19 response highlights several key themes, including shared decision-making and communication, scientific discovery, healthcare economics and insurance, clinical implications of basic neuroscience, and challenges in clinical electrocardiography. By leveraging these areas of expertise, the university was able to develop a comprehensive approach to managing the pandemic on campus.
